The Leys extends to approximately 500 acres (200 hectares) and comprises decommissioned power generating equipment, ash mound, coal store, agricultural land and a nature reserve adjacent to the Wales coastal path and coastline. The site has a pedigree for power generation operating as a coal-fired power station and forming part of Wales critical energy infrastructure over the last 6 decades. Aberthaw A Power Station was first constructed in November 1957, opened officially in 1963 and operated until 1995 before being demolished piecemeal up to July 1997. Aberthaw B Power Station was constructed in 1971 and was fully operational by 1979. The power station went through several changes over its lifetime, including a carbon capture pilot in 2013, 13 years co-firing with biomass from 2004 to 2017 and an environmental upgrade to make it one of the most efficient coal-fired plants in the UK. The power station officially closed in March 2020 and has since been subject to a decommissioning programme.
